coal mining
Slopes are driven at as steep an angle as is practicable for transporting coal by belt. Commonly, a pair of slopes is driven (or a slope is divided into two separate airtight compartments) or ventilation and material transport. Where the minimum coal-seam depth exceeds 250 to 300 metres, it is common to drive vertical shafts.
